The Lusitano is Portugal’s traditional horse breed and one of the oldest and most distinctive Iberian types.
Registered purebred Lusitanos are also known as PSL horses — Puro Sangue Lusitano.
For centuries, Lusitano horses were selected for work that required agility, courage, balance and very quick communication with the rider. Those qualities are still visible in the modern breed.
Today, you will find Lusitanos with very different profiles. Some are bred and trained for high-level dressage, others for working equitation or classical riding, while many make wonderful leisure horses.
That variety is important.
A Lusitano can be sensitive and highly responsive, but that does not mean every Lusitano is difficult. The right individual can give an amateur rider a wonderful feeling of communication without becoming overwhelming.
The magic of a Lusitano is not simply that he reacts quickly.
It is how closely he can listen to the rider.

Portugal is naturally the heart of the Lusitano horse market, with breeders and training yards producing horses for sport, working equitation, classical riding and leisure.
But excellent Lusitano horses for sale can also be found in Spain, where many Portuguese horses are trained, competed and privately owned.
The variety is considerable.
You may find a young PSL at the beginning of his training, an experienced schoolmaster with advanced dressage movements, a working equitation horse with quick reactions or a quiet Lusitano that has spent years hacking and being enjoyed by an amateur owner.
This is why we do not select a Lusitano simply from his pedigree, colour or level of training.

WHAT ARE LUSITANO HORSES LIKE TO RIDE?
Sensitive does not have to mean difficult
One of the characteristics riders often notice first in a Lusitano is responsiveness.
They tend to be attentive to the rider and quick to understand an aid. When horse and rider are well matched, this can create a feeling of lightness and communication that is difficult to forget.
But, as with any breed, temperament varies enormously from one horse to another.
Balance
Lusitano horses are often naturally balanced and compact, qualities that can make collected work feel particularly natural for them.
Sensitivity
A Lusitano can respond to very subtle aids. For the right rider, this creates finesse; for the wrong match, too much sensitivity can become demanding.
Intelligence
Many Lusitanos learn quickly and pay close attention to what their rider is asking. Consistency and clear communication are therefore especially important.
Agility
Their ability to react, turn and rebalance quickly is one of the reasons Lusitano horses are so successful in disciplines such as working equitation.
Connection
Many riders particularly value the feeling that their Lusitano is genuinely involved in the conversation, rather than simply carrying out an exercise.
A good Lusitano does not need to be dull to make an amateur rider feel safe.
He needs to be understandable.

One breed, many ways to enjoy him
The versatility of the Lusitano is one of the reasons the breed has attracted riders far beyond Portugal.
Working Equitation
This is perhaps the discipline that most clearly showcases the Lusitano’s traditional qualities: balance, agility, responsiveness and courage.
Dressage
Modern Lusitano horses are increasingly present in competitive dressage. Their ability to collect, learn quickly and remain attentive to the rider makes them particularly interesting for this work.
Leisure Riding and Hacking
Not every Lusitano needs a competition career. The right horse can also be an excellent leisure partner for riders who want to combine arena work with hacking and everyday enjoyment.
Shows and Traditional Riding
Their presence, trainability and historical connection with Portuguese equestrian culture make Lusitano horses particularly attractive for exhibitions, traditional riding and performances.
The discipline tells you what a horse can do. It does not tell you whether he is the right horse for you. For an amateur rider, his temperament, experience and ease of riding may matter far more than the number of movements he knows.

There is no single Lusitano horse price.
The value of a Lusitano depends on a combination of factors, and two horses of the same age and breed can have very different prices.
Age and training
A young horse with basic training will normally be valued differently from an experienced horse with established dressage work or competition experience.
Temperament and rideability
A genuinely easy, reliable Lusitano that can be enjoyed by an amateur rider can be particularly sought after.

Pedigree and registration
PSL registration, bloodlines and breeding value may influence the price, especially when the horse is intended for breeding or sport.
Competition record
Results in dressage, working equitation or other disciplines can significantly affect the value of a horse.

Health and veterinary history
Soundness, previous veterinary history and the findings of the pre-purchase examination are fundamental when assessing any horse.
Quality and demand
Movement, morphology, colour, presence and overall quality can also influence the market price.

The best value is not necessarily the cheapest Lusitano.

BUYING A LUSITANO HORSE AS AN AMATEUR RIDER
Look for the feeling you want, not only the movements you admire
It is easy to be impressed by a Lusitano performing piaffe, passage, flying changes or advanced lateral work.
But an amateur rider will spend far more time doing ordinary things.
You will tack him up, get on after a few days without riding, ask for a transition that is not perfect, take him outside the arena and occasionally make mistakes.
That is where suitability becomes important.

A highly trained horse is only an advantage if you can comfortably ride and enjoy that training.
You do not need the Lusitano with the most impressive résumé. You need the one who makes you feel like a better rider.

Buying a Lusitano in Europe
from the United States
Many American riders look directly to Portugal and Spain when searching for Lusitano horses for sale for USA, because this gives them access to a much wider selection of horses, breeders and training levels.
For horses intended for export to the United States, however, there is an important point to consider from the beginning: the horse must test negative for equine piroplasmosis, including Theileria equi and Babesia caballi.
Equine piroplasmosis is endemic in Portugal, including important Lusitano-breeding areas, so not every horse available on the Portuguese market will necessarily be eligible for export to the USA.
Spain is also affected by piroplasmosis, but prevalence varies considerably between regions. This means that searching beyond the traditional Lusitano areas in Portugal can sometimes open up additional possibilities for finding PSL horses suitable for export to the United States.
At IberHorse, when we search for a Lusitano for an American buyer, export eligibility is therefore something we take into account early in the selection. There is little benefit in falling in love with the perfect horse only to discover later that he cannot meet the health requirements for entry into the USA.
Veterinary testing, export documentation, international transport and quarantine then need to be coordinated around the horse and the destination.
For a US buyer, the right Lusitano must not only suit the rider —
he must also be eligible to make the journey home.
