SPANISH HORSES FOR SALE
Find the Spanish horse that truly fits you
Spanish horses attract riders from all over the world for their beauty, presence, versatility and close relationship with people.
But finding the right horse is about much more than choosing the one that catches your eye.
At IberHorse, we select Spanish horses for sale in Spain with particular attention to temperament, health, training and rideability, helping amateur riders find horses they can feel confident with and genuinely enjoy.
SPANISH HORSES
What does “Spanish horse” really mean?
The expression Spanish horse is widely used internationally, but it does not refer to just one type of horse.
Many riders use Spanish horse and Andalusian horse almost interchangeably. In reality, the horse market in Spain is much broader.
Alongside registered PRE horses, you can find Spanish Sport Horses, Hispano-Arabians and many other Spanish or Iberian crossbred horses with very different origins, abilities and temperaments.
Understanding these differences matters, especially when you are looking at Spanish horses for sale from abroad. The breed or registration tells you part of the story, but it does not tell you everything about the individual horse.
PRE / Andalusian Horses
The Pura Raza Española is the best-known Spanish breed internationally and the horse most people associate with the traditional Andalusian type.
CDE / Spanish Sport Horses
CDE horses are bred and registered in Spain for sport and may include European sport-horse bloodlines. They can be particularly interesting for dressage, jumping and other competitive disciplines.
Hispano-Arabian Horses
Combining Spanish and Arabian influence, Hispano-Arabians are often athletic, light, energetic and versatile.
Spanish & Iberian Crossbreds
Spain also offers many excellent crossbred horses. For an amateur rider, a good individual with the right temperament and training may be far more important than having a particular breed label.
SPANISH HORSES FOR SALE IN SPAIN
One country, a remarkably
diverse horse market
Spain offers an enormous variety of horses, but there is no single profile that defines a Spanish horse.
You can find horses bred by traditional PRE breeders, animals trained in professional dressage yards, horses owned by private riders, sport horses, leisure horses and horses that have spent much of their lives hacking or working outdoors.
Training levels also vary enormously. Some horses have advanced dressage movements, while others have a simpler education but valuable experience outside the arena. Prices, management and the way horses are presented can differ just as much.
This diversity is one of the great advantages of looking for Spanish horses for sale in Spain: there are many possibilities.
It also means that knowing the market matters.
At IberHorse, we look beyond the advertisement to understand what each horse really offers and whether his experience, temperament and training correspond to what you are looking for.

SPANISH HORSES FOR SPORT AND LEISURE RIDING
What are Spanish horses like to ride?
Spanish horses are popular with riders looking for dressage ability, leisure riding, working equitation, hacking or simply a horse they can enjoy in different situations.
Certain qualities are commonly associated with them, although no breed label can guarantee how an individual horse will feel to ride.
Balance
Many Spanish horses have a naturally compact way of moving and can develop good balance, making them attractive for classical work and dressage.
Comfort
For an amateur rider, comfortable movement can make an enormous difference. A horse that feels balanced and manageable allows you to relax and enjoy your riding.
Sensitivity
Spanish horses can be attentive and responsive to the rider. In the right horse, this creates subtle communication; in the wrong match, that same sensitivity can feel demanding.
Trainability
Many enjoy learning and interacting with people, which can make training particularly rewarding when horse and rider understand each other.
Versatility
Depending on the individual horse, Spanish horses can be enjoyed in dressage, working equitation, leisure riding, hacking and amateur competition.
These are qualities often found in Spanish horses — not qualities guaranteed by the name of the breed.
SPANISH HORSES
PRE, Andalusian or Spanish horse?
The names are often used together, but they do not mean exactly the same thing.
If you are searching online for a Spanish horse, you will quickly come across the terms PRE horse, Andalusian horse and Spanish horse.
A PRE — Pura Raza Española — is a horse registered within the official Spanish purebred system (ANCCE).
The term Andalusian horse is widely used internationally for PRE horses, but it is also sometimes used more loosely for horses with a traditional Spanish appearance or Iberian ancestry.
Spanish horse is broader still. It can describe a horse bred or found in Spain without necessarily telling you his exact breed or registration.
For a buyer, this distinction is important. A horse’s label may tell you about his origins, but his passport, registration and pedigree should confirm exactly what he is.
And when your priority is riding rather than breeding, the most important question remains whether that particular horse is suitable for you.
PRE — officially registered Pura Raza Española
Andalusian horse — commonly used for PRE horses, sometimes more broadly
Spanish horse — a wider term that does not necessarily define breed or registration
The label tells you where to start. The individual horse tells you whether he is right for you.

BUY SPANISH HORSES AS AN AMATEUR RIDER
Choose the horse you will enjoy
on an ordinary day
It is easy to fall in love with a Spanish horse because of his appearance, movement or presence.
But for an amateur rider, the qualities that matter most often become apparent later: how the horse behaves when you mount, how he reacts to a mistake, whether you can ride him after a few days off, how confident you feel hacking and whether everyday handling is straightforward.
That is why, when you buy Spanish horses, we believe the question should not simply be
"Is this a good horse?"
It should be:
"Is this a good horse for me?"
At IberHorse, we pay particular attention to the qualities that affect your everyday relationship with the horse: temperament, sensitivity, confidence, training, previous experience and ease of handling.
A spectacular horse may impress you for five minutes. The right horse should make you want to ride him again tomorrow.
